Next year marks a special milestone for WUBS Radio Station—our 32st anniversary of the Sweet Potato Pie Contest! For decades, this beloved event has brought our community together to celebrate tradition,
talent, and the rich, comforting flavors of homemade sweet potato pies. What began as a small gathering has blossomed into a much-anticipated annual contest, where bakers and shakers of all skill levels come

into each pie. Over the years, we’ve tasted hundreds of unique recipes, witnessed family secrets passed down through generations, and savored the delightful results of both classic and innovative takes on this
Southern favorite.
As we celebrate 32 years, we want to honor not just the pies themselves, but the spirit of community and
togetherness that this contest represents. It’s more than just a competition—it’s about family, friendship, community and the shared love of good food.
Join us in celebrating this milestone! Whether you’re competing for the coveted title of “Best Sweet Potato Pie” or just coming to enjoy the festivities, this year’s contest promises to be the sweetest yet.

History of Juneteenth and Challenging Prayer
Juneteenth commemorates the day, June 19, 1865, when the last formerly enslaved Black people, in Galveston, Texas, learned that they were free as a result of President Abraham Lincoln’s Jan. 1, 1863, Emancipation Proclamation, which ordered that all enslaved people in Confederate states at war against the Union at the time “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.
The date was celebrated by freed people in Texas as “Jubilee Day” in 1866. Later, the name “Juneteenth” a combination of the words “June Nineteenth” was popularized and remains today.
Juneteenth celebrations in the following decades featured music, prayer services, barbecues and other activities, according to History.com. Since that day, Juneteenth celebrations spread across the U.S. as Black people moved from Texas.
In 2021, President Joe Biden proclaimed June 19 as Juneteenth Day of Observance and a national holiday.
“Juneteenth is all about celebrating freedom,” said Latorya Greene, president of the South Bend Chapter Indiana Black Expo. “… This is a day to celebrate when all slaves knew that they were free.”
The Challenging Prayer
Dressed in white shorts and a white shirt with a “Black Lives Matter” chain around his neck, the Rev. Sylvester Williams Jr. faced the crowd, microphone in hand, as he prepared to give the opening prayer for the annual Juneteenth celebration.
Rev. Williams started his prayer by asking those gathered to repeat “Lest We Forget”.
Lord help us “Lest We Forget”
Lord help us “Lest We Forget” from where we come from and how we got here today.
Lord help us “Lest We Forget” that God has brought us form a mighty longer way.
Lord help us “Lest We Forget” our fore runners, who were deemed less than human fought a good fight against slavery .
Lest we forget the sacred baton of freedom that passed from their hands to our and we must pass on to the next generation.
I pray we recommit and rededicate ourselves with the Lord help to preserve and protect our freedoms, because “it seems like (freedom is) slipping away.”
Rev. Williams (along withe late wife Wanda) is the founder of ICU/WUBS-FM (89.7), the day also took on political significance.
In his opening blessing of the event, Williams prayed for God to help attendees protect the preservation of freedom because “it seems like (freedom is) slipping away.”
“This day means a day of celebration, a day of remembrance and a day of challenge to never forget where we came from because we may repeat it.”
“It’s a day of community gathering to be in solidarity, because slavery was brutal and horrible. “Lest We Forget”

The History of the “Hill”
HILLTOP SUNRISE SERVICE at LaSalle Park on the far westside served as a pocket where many residents called home while others called it the swamp. It was a community of connected families living in a polluted environment that made them special.
This historic founding of a unique idea “HILLTOP SUNRISE SERVICE” was to praise God at the base of LaSalle Park in South Bend, Indiana starting in 1979 at the rise of the sun on every Father’s Day.
It is called the “HILLTOP SUNRISE CHOIR” by the founder, Mrs. Bertha Norman, a Mezzo Suprano, who saw a vision of praising God on top of a Hill.
The event drew a mutli-racial group of people together from the community and continued until 2004, which means it was successful 25 years.

MY FAITH IN ACTION Spring Quarterly 2025
My dear brothers and sisters, we are experiencing a year of transition, tension and tragedy, but I believe deep within my heart that in every Christian there is a call to live with purpose and meaning. It is a call to lead, to protect, to serve and to defend the faith.
Many of us have witness the uncertainty and fragility of 2025, but the spiritual certainty is God’s has a way to call our faith into action.
For over 44 years ICU/WUBS has been a trusted name, tried by time providing inspiring gospel resources and support for strengthening our community and listeners faith.
When the world marginalizes us and think religious radio is non-essential and should step aside we are stronger than before. Praise the Lord.
The uplifting nature of gospel programming is feeding and fueling people who are hungry for hope and encouragement in these uncertain times.
This letter is to encourage and invite you to put your faith in action.
Brother Johnson came to the radio station praising God recently because he lived a life of drugs and hopelessness, but one day while listening to WUBS radio was convicted then went to church and never again been the same. Not only did he come to share his testimony, but planted a financial seed. That is faith in action. Praise the Lord.
Sister Elonda says, “I smile with gratitude every time I am listening to the powerful sermons and inspiring music on the WUBS. I am grateful for the service you provide our community.
That is faith in action. Praise the Lord.
These are just two of many testimonials of faith in action, but it does not stop there because you can put your faith in action to protect, preserve and defend the faith over the airwaves.
The bible says that faith without works is dead? James 2: 29
You are invited to put your faith in action by sending a financial blessing and to pray for the upcoming outreach ministries of ICU/WUBS. Together we will see and hear how God is moving in the lives of His people saying, “What must I do to be saved?”
Mark your calendar and save these dates. Re-imagining the historical “Hilltop Service”. June 15th and the 9th Annual Gospel in the Garden September 14th, 2025
Send your “My Faith in Action” prayer concerns and contribution.
ICU/WUBS – P. O. Bx 3931 – South Bend, IN 46619
Sincerely,
Rev. Sylvester Williams, Jr.
